OOC INFORMATION Name: Kat Email/AIM: swordkat@gmail.com / fenrirthekat CDJ: Timezone: GMT+10 How did you find out about us? My flist! THE BASICS Full Name: Fletcher Roderick Avery Age and Birthday: 20 / 16 April 1960 House and Graduation Year: Slytherin 1978 Current Location: The family home in Upper Berwick, outside of Shrewsbury, Shropshire Blood Status: Pureblood Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual Marital Status: Single Family: Father: Warwick Avery (Slytherin 1953) Mother: Lucinda Avery nee [purename] (Ravenclaw 1954) Sister: Temperance Avery (Hufflepuff 1980) Aunt (estranged): Sheila Podmore nee Avery (Ravenclaw 1954) Uncle (estranged): Garrett Podmore (Slytherin 1954) Cousin (estranged): Sturgis Podmore (Slytherin 1975) Cousin (estranged): Joanna Podmore (Gryffindor 1978) GAME INVOLVEMENT Current Job: Intelligence Analyst for I-2. Currently low-level given his age and inexperience but he’s climbing the ranks. Political Group: Death Eaters Political Knowledge: His fellow Death Eaters obviously know he’s one of them and his parents are also aware given his father is also a Death Eater and are very proud of his membership. His sister does not officially know as she’s too young but she may well suspect. Skills: Fletcher is well trained in the Dark Arts, something his father began teaching him after Fletcher’s unfortunate rebellious phase when he was fourteen. Warwick thought it was probably time to take the boy under his wing to ensure there would be no more backsliding. As such, Fletcher is well trained in the Dark curses and had a good solid grasp on the Cruciatus and can manage to Imperius some people. He still can’t overpower the stronger willed but he’s working on it. He also has very strong Transfiguration and DADA skills. He’s also not averse to passing on information from work though at his current level, he doesn’t get access to much of the juicy stuff. He will one day though and he considers himself a Death Eater mole in the making, right up there with that silly Muggle Kim Philby. Politics: Fletcher is a died-in-the-wool supporter of the Walpurgis party. Partly family tradition but mostly as a backlash to the fallout from his unfortunate infatuation with a Muggleborn when he was fourteen. He was shown the light by Max Wilkes and his parents and has since then wrapped himself in the purist ideals he was raised with. It must be said that the Averys are not extreme purists. They’re quite open to halfbloods wishing to better their family lines and have even married a few here and there (usually through the daughters and younger sons so as not to sully the Avery line too much; an eldest son looking to marry a halfblood would face a great deal of opposition in the family unless he could prove it was for the greater good of the Avery lineage… so it has happened a few times in the past, always to the betterment of the Averys) to aid in that. However they are not fond of Muggles or Muggleborns seeing the Muggle influences brought into the wizarding world by the Muggleborns as being detrimental to all that is good and golden about the wizarding world. They are not in the ‘death to all Muggles’ camp but they would like to see better handling of Muggleborns so as to limit the creep of Muggle influence. Fletcher, in a fit of teenage romanticism, used this as his platform for rebellion when he was a teenager though in truth he never really abandoned these beliefs. It was just a way of making his parents jump and pay attention to him. It got a little bit out of hand in some ways but it was just a phase and he had no hesitation in joining the Death Eaters nor does he doubt that their goals are worthwhile. It’s a bit of a shame that they have to kill people but that’s their own damn fault. If they just acceded to the Dark Lord’s wishes, there wouldn’t be any of this trouble. Past War Involvement: Fletcher joined the Death Eaters right out of school alongside his school friends (Mulciber, Wilkes, Snape and Rosier). He is a skilled duellist for his age and that also makes him useful. His first major act as a Death Eater was in the Red Day. He was in the thick of things there, albeit towards the rear, being a ‘new boy’ and all that. Still, he did his part and he’s fairly certain that one of the civilian deaths came at his hand. The man certainly went down and as far as Fletcher knows, he didn’t get up again. He certainly acquitted himself well enough to be included in the attack on King’s Cross on September 1st. The death of the child gave him a few moments of pause but no doubts. It was unfortunate but as his grandmother’s house elf always said: you can’t bake a cake without breaking a few eggs. The death of his friend Evan Rosier and the arrest of Sebastian Willkes enraged him, as much on Max’s behalf as anything else. The further death of Christian Mulciber only increased his anger and his determination to see this through to the end. His friends’ deaths were not going to be in vain and they had to win in order to see Sebastian released from what Fletcher considered to be his wrongful arrest. He has subsequently thrown himself with enthusiasm into both his work as a Death Eater as well as his work in I-2, knowing that everything he learns there will aid the Death Eaters. War Effort: N/A DETAILS 20 Word Sentence Describing Your Character: A boy with those big blue eyes and that innocent face could never do anything evil. Or be a spy. Right? Personal History: The Avery family is an old pureblood family. It is not in the realms of old pure families such as the Blacks and the Malfoys, having married out to various halfbloods from time to time over the generations but it has always retained a core of pureness, generally through the eldest son, that the family has jealously guarded. Warwick, as the eldest son, did his duty and married Lucinda [Name] though he would hardly have called it a ‘duty’. Warwick and Lucinda had met at Hogwarts and fallen in love. Warwick has always stated, to his father’s occasional annoyance, that he would have married Lucinda even if she’d been a Halfblood. It was only occasional annoyance based on Warwick’s insufferable smugness because Lucinda was certainly an asset to the Avery family. She was intelligent, beautiful, erudite and talented and Warwick’s father likely wouldn’t have opposed the marriage if she had been a Halfblood. Warwick and Lucinda married when they were nineteen but it took them a few years to get around to having children. They both had careers and Lucinda wanted to forge her own career first and establish herself before taking time to have children. Warwick certainly didn’t object and Fletcher Roderick Avery did not arrive on the scene until 1960. He was a fussy baby, prone to colic and other illnesses, but his doting parents scarcely cared because Fletcher was also quite adorable in their admittedly biased eyes. He had a set of big blue eyes that when they welled up with tears would have both parents scrambling to fix whatever had gone wrong. That’s not to say Fletcher was spoiled as he was growing up. He might have been indulged but he was indulged within a strict set of boundaries. Warwick and Lucinda were not going to let their child become some sort of useless wastrel or worse… be the type of boy who would betray the family by becoming a blood traitor or worse, by marrying a Muggleborn. Both Warwick and Lucinda had strong purist views. Not extreme by any means but certainly strong. Purebloods were superior. Halfbloods of good stock or with exceptional natures were to be valued and encouraged. Muggleborns were inferior and a waste of space. Muggles... well, they were insignificant and incredibly inferior. They ensured that little Fletcher grew up with those views firmly entrenched in his head. Naturally enough, Fletcher went off to Hogwarts when he was eleven. He was Sorted into Slytherin, which pleased his father, and certainly pleased Fletcher. The boy had a round, innocent looking face and enormous blue eyes which could well up with tears at the drop of a hat. Fletcher had long ago learned to use these as weapons to get what he wanted (and not so incidentally occasionally drop his little sister into trouble!) and his manipulative nature made him a natural for Slytherin. He was quite eager to meet his dormmates and found them intriguing. He already knew Evan Rosier from various society functions he got dragged to. The other boy came from a good family and the two of them had already become friends before school started. Maximilian Wilkes was also a known quantity to a certain extent. He knew from his parents that the Wilkes family had fallen into disgrace for much of society due to Muggle influence but that he was not to look down upon them because they were working hard to redeem the family name. So he was inclined to like and befriend Max. Severus Snape was a bit of an enigma at first but Fletcher soon realised that Severus was intelligent and ambitious and he seemed to be the sort of person his father would approve of him knowing so he was happy to become friends with Severus. Another of their little group was Christian Mulciber from the year above them who was someone Fletcher knew from pureblood society as well. Thus Fletcher found himself quite happy in his House and his dorm. He had a good and interesting collection of friends and he enjoyed the school work and did well without actually seeming to do much in the way of work. He perhaps didn’t get many Os but the strings of EEs he brought home were certainly acceptable to his parents. The cloud on the horizon… for there always has to be a cloud on the horizon… came when he was fourteen and in Fourth Year. It was a combination of events. His parents being exceptionally busy with their respective work, his grandparents also being busy, an attack of teenage hormones meaning he interpreted that as them neglecting him, his discovery of the wonders of girls and some perfectly natural teenage rebellion all combined in such a way that he declared himself in love with a Muggleborn girl at school. He was going to throw off the trapping and beliefs of his family and marry this girl. He didn’t care! Nothing mattered except love! How could he allow mere beliefs to get in the way of their epic love? Needless to say, this was actually a very effective way of setting a cat amongst the pigeons. His parents were up in arms but the many letters and Howlers that flowed his way only served to cement his rebellious infatuation with this Muggleborn girl. It was the efforts of Max Wilkes that turned out to be far more effective than any lecture from his parents or grandparents. Max Wilkes knew firsthand the problems of marrying beneath you. His family had gone through it. His words about the ‘evils of Mudbloods’, being from a friend and someone with experience rather than a parental figure, were enough of a slap in the face to make Fletcher see reason. He still hung onto it a little bit for the rest of the school year because of the way it made his parents react. In the summer between Fourth and Fifth Year, he got the parental attention he’d been after and he got it in spades and it was more than enough to put paid to his little rebellion. His father, after long discussion with his mother, took him under his wing and began teaching him the Dark Arts. His reasoning for this was the rise of the Death Eaters. Warwick was a member himself and he’d always had plans to bring his son into the fold. Fletcher’s little Mudblood rebellion had nearly jeopardised that so he chose to advance his plans for educating his son properly. This education continued during all the remaining holidays of his schooling and Fletcher was more than willing to pass on what he learned to his friends, though obviously that had to be done carefully so as not to make any of the teachers and especially the Headmaster suspicious. He also threw himself into his studies at school. His father had made it plain that the better his marks were, the more he’d teach him and Fletcher found the Dark Arts fascinating. At that age, he hadn’t quite grasped the concept of the kind of damage they could do to people. They were ‘forbidden magic’ and in his teenager’s mind, that made them interesting and worth learning. After he finished at Hogwarts, he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do with himself. He had Os in most of his subjects so he certainly had options, just not much in the way of conviction. He ended up applying to the Aurors more out of a lack of imagination and because his parents seemed to approve of the idea. He also applied to I-2 almost on a whim. He never got past the initial stages for the Aurors. His resume had been seen by the people in I-2 and when they’d discreetly eyeballed him when he was at the Ministry, they felt he had a lot of promise for their area. He was invited to an interview and hired as an intelligence analyst. It wasn’t quite the glamorous spy job he’d half-hoped for but once he started, he found he rather liked the job. He was, of course, started out with low-level things, probably even things that had been already worked over by others, but they wanted to see how well he could put two and two together and whether he could come up with four as a result. He could. He found that he had a knack for being able to pull out tiny details that didn’t seem to mean much on their own but when combined with details from this report, that report and the other report, turned into something very interesting. He was tagged as being very promising and gradually the kind of information he was given began to get more interesting and more in the realms of the top secret. He definitely liked this. He still sort of felt he would have been good at field work given he looked about as harmless as a lamb but this was perhaps even better – he would eventually get access to all sorts of information that he could pass on to the Death Eaters. He didn’t consider that treason however though he would never dream about passing on information to anyone else. The Death Eaters were the natural rulers of the wizarding world so it was only right they knew this information. He even found that his sometimes acid sense of humour wasn’t looked on askance in this department. Many of the other analysts were jaded and enjoyed making biting comments about the people featured in their reports. That Fletcher was willing and able to join in just endeared him to them. The other big thing that occurred after he finished at Hogwarts was joining the Death Eaters alongside his friends. His father had been grooming him for this for a few years now and he was pleased to be found acceptable. His job was given approval as while he may not be able to provide much in the short term, in the long term he could be a valuable asset. The training his father had insisted on gave him a little bit of a leg up in the Death Eaters though he was smart enough not to get carried away or think himself better than anyone else. At least not openly. He could think it all he liked. But there were some powerful men involved in the Death Eaters and truth be told, he was a little in awe of them. He would no more have angered them than he would have angered the Dark Lord. He kept his head down, worked hard and did what he was told to do. He did acquit himself well in the Red Day battle and when asked to report, he claimed a kill though he was careful to qualify it by saying that he had no proof. Whatever the opinion was of that, he was ordered to join the attack on King’s Cross. He was a bit cocky going into that battle and while he wasn’t seriously injured, he knew he hadn’t exactly covered himself in glory. He threw himself into training in the aftermath. He was determined to be better. His job might have him sitting behind a desk all day but he’d be damned if he was just a paper pusher. The deaths of Evan Rosier and Christian Mulciber and the arrest of Max’s brother in the early months of 1980 were sobering. The idea that they could be killed wasn’t one he’d really entertained that much. He was a pureblood and a Death Eater and a young man. He’d rather thought he was invincible. But if Evan and Christian could die and Sebastian could be arrested then they weren’t entirely safe. This was unacceptable to Fletcher and as he saw it, the only way to make sure that no one else he cared about died or was imprisoned was to win. He took this new determination into his work as well, branching out into a bit of cryptography as well. His superiors are a letting him run with it for now to see if he’ll succeed or fall on his face. They’re like that. They’re still giving me old information. Or at least information that has been laundered so many times it’s a wonder there’s anything left to analyse. It’s higher level stuff than I’ve been getting in the past but it’s still not fresh off the launderer’s table from our agents. Surely I’ve proven myself? I’m young, true, but I’m good and they know it. [/Ward] [Warded to Severus & Max] Are you two doing anything tonight? I was thinking you could come over to mine and we could do some training and afterwards have a drink and moan about the state of our lives.
